Green areas and parks in Sassari: 6 places to relax

Ideal for: walking, reading and discovering a piece of the city’s history.

Monserrato Park is probably the most elegant of Sassari’s gardens.

Located at the entrance to the city, along via Budapest, it covers approximately six hectares and grew out of what was once one of the main noble estates in the Sassari countryside.

Its current appearance is mainly the result of changes made in the nineteenth century, when ownership passed to Giovanni Antonio Sanna. Paths, hedges, citrus trees, olive trees, palms and monumental trees alternate with small architectural features that make the walk particularly interesting.

Among its most distinctive features are the Vasca delle Rane, the Tempietto delle Acque, the nymphaeum, the hunting tower and the belvedere.

It is one of the best places in Sassari for anyone seeking peace and quiet without actually having to leave the city.

Good to know: the park has an underground car park with around 80 spaces. Animals are not allowed to enter.

Ideal for: a break while visiting the city center.

For the people of Sassari, they are simply “i Giardinetti”.

The Public Gardens are located in the heart of the city, between viale Italia, via Tavolara, viale Mancini and corso Regina Margherita di Savoia, and are one of the green spaces most easily reached on foot from the center.

Their history dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century, and the complex is now divided into several areas, with large trees, lawns, paths, benches and spaces also used for public events.

The area is also home to the Padiglione Tavolara, one of the city’s most interesting cultural buildings, while the statues dedicated to Sassari-born Presidents of the Republic Antonio Segni and Francesco Cossiga stand toward viale Berlinguer.

In 2026, the municipality also scheduled restoration work on the historic fountain in the Gardens, with the aim of restoring both its hydraulic operation and its architectural appearance.

For visitors to Sassari, they are the perfect place to take a few minutes’ break from an itinerary between Piazza d’Italia, the Sanna Museum and the historic center.

If Monserrato is the elegant garden, Baddimanna is the great green lung.

The pine grove covers approximately 10 hectares in the northeastern part of the city, in the Monte Rosello neighborhood. It was created around seventy years ago after a fire destroyed the area’s native vegetation.

Today it is one of the city’s parks best suited to anyone who wants to spend several hours outdoors.

Inside, there is a cycle and pedestrian path, bicycle racks, picnic tables and benches, play areas and a stage that can be used for shows and public events.

The park is also home to the Monument to the infantrymen of the Sassari Brigade.

Baddimanna is also one of the few large urban green areas where dogs are allowed, provided they are kept on a leash and park rules are respected.

When you need somewhere to walk without constantly having a traffic light in front of you, it is probably the best choice.

Ideal for: families and children.

The Monte Rosello neighborhood is also home to Emanuela Loi Park, a large green area between via Montello and via Palatucci, via D’Annunzio, via Carducci, via Ungaretti and via Farina.

The park covers more than 16,000 square meters and is completely fenced.

Inside, twelve large flowerbeds are arranged around paths, with lawns, benches, trees and seasonal blooms. In the central area there is a fountain with a monument dedicated to the fallen of all wars.

What makes it particularly suitable for families are the four equipped play areas, along with two courts for playing bowls.

In 2026, the municipality also launched a new procedure for the park’s supervision and maintenance and planned a new kiosk as part of measures to improve services in the city’s main green areas.

Ideal for: children, neighborhood walks and dog owners.

Maria Carta Park is located between via Venezia and via Rizzeddu and is one of the main green spaces in the southern part of the city.

It covers approximately 18,000 square meters and features large grassy areas, Mediterranean vegetation, paths and low stone walls that can also be used as seats.

There are three play areas, with equipment for different age groups and impact-absorbing surfaces.

A particularly useful feature is the separate dog exercise area, accessible from via Rizzeddu. Animals must remain in the area reserved for them, as access to the rest of the park is subject to the usual restrictions for fenced green areas.

Here too, the municipality scheduled the construction of a new kiosk in 2026, with services for park visitors.

Ideal for: families and anyone living in the northern part of the city.

The Parco della Solidarietà is the main green space in the Li Punti neighborhood.

It covers approximately 18,000 square meters between via Bruno, via Manunta, via Millelire and via Vittorino Era, with numerous entrances distributed around its perimeter.

The park includes large lawns, trees, pedestrian paths and a children’s play area.

It is primarily a neighborhood park, less monumental than Monserrato and less wooded than Baddimanna, but for precisely this reason it clearly represents the role green areas can play in the city’s daily life: places to meet, bring children and spend a few hours outdoors without traveling toward the center.

During July and August, the official opening hours extend until 22:00, making it particularly pleasant on summer evenings as well.

The choice mainly depends on what you want to do:

• For the nicest walk: Monserrato Park.
• For a break in the center: Public Gardens.
• For sports and picnics: Baddimanna.
• For visiting with children: Emanuela Loi Park.
• For an equipped neighborhood park: Maria Carta.

Finally, there is an important new development in 2026.

The Municipality of Sassari has created Sardinia’s first experimental network of climate shelters, identifying 22 public spaces where people can seek relief during heat waves.

These include Monserrato, Baddimanna, Emanuela Loi, Maria Carta, Parco della Solidarietà and the Public Gardens, together with other gardens, libraries and tree-lined spaces throughout the city.

The network officially acknowledges something that becomes clear fairly quickly during Sassari’s summers: having a tree overhead in July is not merely a matter of aesthetics.

Park opening hours change throughout the year. In summer, most large green areas remain open until the evening, while in the winter months they close earlier.

In the event of strong winds or adverse weather conditions, the municipality may also temporarily close parks and gardens for safety reasons.

It is therefore advisable to always check the latest opening hours before your visit, especially if you plan to arrive in the late afternoon.

Sassari may not be remembered as a city of large metropolitan parks, but it has a network of green spaces that varies greatly from one neighborhood to another.

From Monserrato’s nineteenth-century garden to Baddimanna’s pine grove, there is almost always a nearby place where you can find some shade and slow your pace.
