The Municipality of Sassari has outlined a new strategy for the future of the Mercato Civico, with the goal of transforming the structure into a modern hub of taste and sociality. The project, recently approved by the council, aims to integrate the functions of the modern block with the Liberty building, creating a single identity space capable of stimulating the economic and residential recovery of the historic center.
A center between food and wine and culture
The vision of the administration, led by Mayor Giuseppe Mascia, envisions that the market will no longer be just a place for buying groceries, but the epicenter of community life. The structure will host areas dedicated to the promotion of local food and wine excellence, restaurants, and catering venues, becoming a taste district open to all citizens.
In addition to the commercial component, the project provides for the creation of multifunctional spaces intended for cultural events, concerts, readings, and art exhibitions. This diversification aims to make the market a tourist and social reference point, integrating commercial tradition with contemporary needs for aggregation.
Investments and timelines
The 2026-2028 enhancement plan utilizes several sources of funding. The redevelopment of the upper spaces is supported by the Iti Sassari Storica program through Erdf and Esf+ funds, while resources from the Fsc fund are planned for the terrace. In parallel, an investment of 250 thousand euros from the Sardinia Region will be allocated to marketing, training, and the creation of a brand to accompany the transition toward a single market.
While the restyling work on the Mercato Liberty di Sassari continues, the municipal administration is coordinating the action through the new Territorial Development Policies service. The intervention is part of a broader urban regeneration plan that provides for 24 million in investments for the entire area, including proximity services and the Piazza San Donato area.
