Delivery of the sports hall on Via Kennedy, in the Latte Dolce district of Sassari, is now expected in February 2027. This was announced by the city councillor for public works, Salvatore Sanna: the construction site, which according to the previous schedule was due to be completed by December 2026, has fallen further behind. The causes cited include difficulties in obtaining the metal supplies needed to complete the structure.
The facility is being built on Via John Fitzgerald Kennedy and is intended to host indoor sports, including volleyball, handball and five-a-side football. The project has PNRR funding of 3.5 million euros. In recent months, the administration had set the goal of completing the work by the end of 2026, but the new forecast pushes delivery back by several months.
In late spring, Sanna had described a construction site still in its early stages, following a series of technical obstacles. The councillor said the project had been inherited from the previous administration with work 2% complete and that, at the time, progress had reached around 30%. The problems encountered included difficulties with the design and a water leak, which had led to changes and delays.
On that same occasion, the councillor had put the total cost at more than 5 million euros, including the initial funding, additional sums and one million added by the Municipality. The case is part of the broader issue of funding for the city’s sports facilities. The Municipality had also included the project among those applying for regional funding for sports facilities.
The delay adds to the difficulties that have affected the project since it began. Problems have occurred during construction and trees have been felled; some residents had also challenged the impact of the structure on the light entering nearby homes. On February 12, 2026, the Municipality announced that work on the prefabricated walls and roof was progressing well. The February forecast concerns delivery of the project: it does not amount to an opening date for the public or sports clubs.
