The Municipality of Sassari has been allocated €9.91 million by the Region for work on around fifteen sports facilities. The funding comes from a call for applications open to metropolitan cities, provinces and municipalities with more than 100,000 residents, published on 6 October with a deadline of 13 October. The administration must now decide which projects to pursue and how to proceed.
The regional call had a total allocation of €15 million for all of Sardinia. Sassari had submitted requests for more than €15 million; the Region recalculated the grants at 66.06% of the amounts requested. According to the published allocation, the Sassari area is receiving the largest share: it is followed by Sulcis-Iglesiente with just over €2.6 million, Cagliari with just over €2 million and Oristano with around €400,000.
The largest amount is for the former Palestra Coni, next to Vanni Sanna Stadium: against a request for €5 million, €3.3 million has been allocated. The building has been abandoned for decades and is in a state of disrepair. The Municipality is working to make use of the facility and has met with Sport e Salute, which inherited it from CONI; the grant could support an agreement to transfer or grant use of the facility. Its restoration would also benefit volleyball in the city.
Among the main facilities, Vanni Sanna Stadium will receive €1,981,811.38 for structural work, compared with the €3 million requested. Just under €800,000 is earmarked for Palaserradimigni, against an application for €1.2 million. At Acquedotto, the new football pitches for 5-a-side and 7-a-side games have also been completed, while other work remains to be defined.
The allocation also includes the multi-purpose sports hall on Via Kennedy in Latte Dolce, which is still under construction, Ippodromo Pinna and several neighbourhood facilities. The amounts listed are:
- just over €1.6 million for the sports hall on Via Kennedy, against a request for €2.5 million;
- almost €1.2 million for Ippodromo Pinna, out of the €1.8 million requested;
- just over €260,000 for the pitches at Caniga and Baddimannitta;
- €60,000 for the covered track at Stadio dei Pini and the same amount, on paper, for the swimming pools and basketball court in Latte Dolce;
- almost €100,000 for the Luna e Sole “Lu Fangazzu” swimming pools and €52,000 for PalaSantoru, compared with the €80,000 requested;
- €66,000 for the facility at Santa Maria Bambina, €33,000 for the baseball and softball facility, €19,000 for the multi-purpose facility at Palmadula and almost €60,000 for the 5-a-side football pitch at Carbonazzi.
Construction of the Latte Dolce sports hall, initially expected to be completed by December, has undergone changes and delays despite being funded through the PNRR. Palaserradimigni is also undergoing modernisation and renovation. The regional funds therefore add to work already underway or planned, but their final allocation will depend on decisions by the municipal administration.
