The Breast Unit of the Sassari University Hospital presented its experience in robotic breast cancer surgery at the 128th National Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery, held in Rome from October 11 to 14. As part of Pink October, on Saturday October 31 the team will offer free breast examinations at the LILT office in Sassari.

At the congress, Professor Alessandro Fancellu, director of the Breast Unit, presented the Single-Port robotic mastectomy, a technique introduced at the Sassari facility in 2025. The procedure removes the mammary gland through a small lateral incision, preserving the skin and the nipple-areola complex. The robot allows surgeons to operate through a single access point and perform immediate reconstruction with an implant.

The technique is currently reserved for selected cases. According to the available evidence, medium-term oncological outcomes are comparable to those of traditional surgery. The multidisciplinary team evaluates the choice between mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery based on the characteristics of the disease and the patient’s condition; mastectomy is performed in around 20–30% of breast cancer cases.

The Sassari Breast Unit performs more than 500 breast procedures a year and is a referral center for north-central Sardinia. Its multidisciplinary organization follows EUSOMA quality criteria. AOU Health Director Lucia Anna Mameli highlighted the importance of combining prevention and early diagnosis with innovation and the expertise of healthcare professionals.

Saturday’s initiative is part of Pink October, a month dedicated to breast cancer prevention. The AOU is renewing its appeal to take part in mammography screening: participation in Sardinia is lower than in several other regions. Sassari’s calendar has already included free breast examinations and Pap tests.
