The protest by workers at the Aou of Sassari continued on Friday, October 9 outside the General Directorate, on viale San Pietro, on the second day of the strike. The unions threatened to take their dispute to the Ministry of Economy in Rome and to submit their collective resignations, demanding answers on contractual issues and working conditions.

The rally, animated by whistles, megaphones and flags, was attended by Sassari Mayor Giuseppe Mascia. The mayor announced that he would write to Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, saying it was unacceptable that the budget freeze, according to his account, had for years prevented staff from being paid properly and affected the ability to provide an adequate service. Mascia also deplored the absence of the University of Sassari, calling on it to support the university hospital.

The protest began on Thursday, October 8, with a demonstration in Cagliari, followed by meetings with the regional Health Committee and representatives of the Regional Government. During the assembly in Sassari, the unions and the RSU said they had secured a meeting with Management for Wednesday, October 14: the meeting is to clarify why the contractual agreements have not been certified by the board of auditors.

Another commitment reported by workers’ representatives is to send a further request to the Ministry of Economy to unblock the situation. The ministry appoints the chair of the board of auditors. The unions disputed that commitments had already been made in the past and said that for three years they have been unable to conduct contract negotiations or secure any funds for workers. The protest and the reasons for the strike had also been outlined in an earlier article.

The issues raised include staff shortages, overcrowded wards, the use of additional beds and stretchers, professionals leaving, and delays in recruitment. According to the unions and the RSU, these problems affect the quality of care and increase risks for patients and staff. On the financial front, pay progression, productivity pay, supplementary pay and recognition of additional hours remain unresolved, with claims relating to 2024 and 2025.

The unions announced further action if no answers are forthcoming. The prospect of a demonstration outside the Ministry of Economy and mass resignations was presented as a threat, not as an action already carried out. The strike involved Aou staff on October 8 and 9; the organization had anticipated possible disruption while confirming that essential services would be maintained.

  • The strike took place on Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9; the first rally was in Cagliari, the second outside the Aou’s Management offices in Sassari.
  • Minimum and essential services were maintained; outpatient activities and non-urgent services could be delayed or canceled.
  • A meeting with Management is expected on Wednesday, October 14.
