From Monday, October 5 Sirio trams will run again along the entire route between Emiciclo Garibaldi and Santa Maria di Pisa. MetroSassari service is resuming after a technical shutdown in recent weeks, which was needed to complete extraordinary maintenance work on the vehicles and infrastructure.
With the return of the trams, the period of replacement bus service will also come to an end. The buses were used to maintain connections while the vehicles were out of service. Arst used the suspension to carry out work on both the vehicles and the line: this covered components and structures related to operations, as well as station platforms.
The work included overhauling the switch mechanisms, which allow the points to direct vehicles onto different tracks. The contact points between the trams and the overhead line were also modified, with the aim of reducing wear and improving performance during journeys. Platform markings were repainted. The work was completed ahead of the service restart scheduled for Monday.
The resumption was welcomed by Fit Cisl Sardegna. Regional secretary Alessandro Russu described the return to the full route as «an important result for the city of Sassari, its passengers and the local public transport system». He also recognized the contribution of the staff, referring to the «strong commitment of the women and men workers» in restoring the vehicles and service.
The union identified continued investment in maintenance, vehicles and the human resources needed to operate Sirio as the next goal. For passengers, the operational change takes effect on Monday, October 5: services between the two ends of the route will once again run on rails, after a period when buses provided the service. The reopening therefore covers the entire route between Emiciclo Garibaldi and Santa Maria di Pisa.
