The Torres returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Atalanta U23 at the Vanni Sanna in Sassari. In Sunday’s match on 11 October, part of the ninth round of Group B in Serie C, the Rossoblù built their win in the first half through Gabriele Berto and Luigi Scotto, then held firm against the Bergamo side’s response.
The match remained in the balance until the final whistle: the second half brought an opposition goal that was ruled out, two Atalanta crossbars and a penalty saved from Bunino. Zanaboni’s goal set up a tense finish, but the team coached by Alfonso Greco defended their lead and claimed three points, ending a run of three consecutive draws.
Berto opens the scoring, Scotto doubles the lead with a free kick
The first decisive moment came in the 14th minute. Following a corner, Berto got the decisive touch to put Torres ahead: a goal against his former team, the club the defender joined from in the summer.
Before the half-hour mark, captain Scotto took centre stage. From a free kick on the left, he curled the ball past Anelli to make it 2-0. A piece of technical brilliance that swung the match Torres’ way and allowed the Sassari side to see out the rest of the first half with a two-goal lead.
Torres also had a chance to extend their lead through Lorenzo Di Stefano, but Anelli saved his effort. The score remained 2-0 at half-time.
A lively second half: disallowed goal and penalty saved
Atalanta U23 came back onto the pitch looking to get back into the match. Navarro hit the crossbar from distance and Levak put the rebound in, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a video review. Misitano also hit the woodwork with a header.
Torres had a chance to seal the result when they were awarded a penalty following a Football Video Support review. Bunino, who had come on for Scotto, stepped up, but Anelli saved his spot kick to keep the Bergamo side in the game.
In the 83rd minute, Zanaboni pulled one back following a free kick. In stoppage time, Zaccagno was called into action again, turning Bertolini’s dangerous effort behind for a corner. The Rossoblù held on until the final whistle.
