Alghero, ASL of Sassari launches project to support caregivers and home care workers

“Caring for those who care”, the pilot project promoted by the ASL of Sassari to support family caregivers, home care assistants and domestic carers in north-western Sardinia, began in Alghero on Friday, 11 September 2026.

The first meeting took place at the city’s community house and launched a programme aimed at the company’s three social and healthcare districts. The initiative seeks to improve the quality of home care, strengthen care-related and interpersonal skills, and prevent the physical and emotional overload experienced by those who provide care every day.

A network to ensure families are not left alone

The meetings are designed as opportunities for listening, welcoming and discussion among families, social and healthcare services, and local professionals. The aim is to begin co-designing care provision, bringing to light the needs of those who care for people with severe disabilities or who are not self-sufficient. “Family caregivers, home care assistants and domestic carers must no longer feel alone,” explained Annarosa Negri, director of Social and Healthcare Services at the ASL of Sassari. According to Negri, the project aims to strengthen the sense of community and expand training, information and support programmes.

Antonietta Bifulco, director of the Alghero district, described the first stage as an opportunity to listen and bring to light needs that have often gone unanswered. The listening phase, she explained, should lead to concrete interventions addressing the community’s health needs.

The meeting schedule

The schedule continues on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at the community house in Ittiri, at Alivesi Hospital, with two sessions: from 10 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, 22 September, it will be the turn of the community house in Thiesi, at the civic hospital, with the same times. The meetings for the Ozieri and Sassari districts will be scheduled at a later date.

Starting this week, caregivers, home care assistants and domestic carers residing in one of the municipalities in the Alghero district can complete an anonymous questionnaire. It takes just a few minutes to complete and will help identify the training and support needs present in the area, thereby guiding the next stages of the project.

The theme of local support networks and shared spaces is also at the centre of other local initiatives, such as the redevelopment of Piazza San Donato in Sassari, conceived as a new community space.
