Filling up the tank is once again weighing more heavily on the pockets of Sassari motorists. In just over two months, the average price of self-service petrol in Sassari has grown by about 27 cents per liter, while diesel has increased by over 35 cents. A progression that today brings the cost of a normal refill well over one hundred euros.

The most recent data available for the Sassari area depict a particularly heavy picture. As of September 22, 2026, in the municipality of Sassari, self-service petrol cost an average of 2.163 euros per liter, while diesel required 2.344 euros per liter.

How much does fuel cost today in Sassari

Broadening the view to the entire province, the figure rises further. According to the processing of prices reported to the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, self-service petrol in the province of Sassari stood at approximately 2.172 euros per liter and diesel at 2.357 euros.

The official regional values from Mimit, updated as of September 22, indicate for Sardinia 2.165 euros per liter for petrol and 2.352 for diesel, both in self-service mode. On the same day, the Italian average on the road network was respectively 2.156 and 2.340 euros per liter.

The Sassari area is therefore positioned above the national figure, with a gap that on the provincial average reaches approximately 1.6 cents per liter for petrol and 1.7 cents for diesel.

From July to September: over 35 cents more for diesel

It is primarily the comparison with the beginning of the summer that shows how rapidly prices have changed.

On July 13, 2026, self-service petrol in the municipality of Sassari cost an average of 1.889 euros per liter, while diesel was at 1.992 euros.

Just over two months later, it moved to 2.163 euros for petrol and 2.344 for diesel. This means an increase of about 27.4 cents per liter for petrol, equal to 14.5%, and 35.2 cents for diesel, almost 17.7%.

Translated to a classic 50-liter fill-up, the price hike becomes immediately perceptible. An average fill-up of petrol in Sassari today costs about 108.15 euros, while for a diesel car it reaches about 117.20 euros.

In mid-July, using the city averages of the same period, it would have cost about 94.45 euros for petrol and 99.60 for diesel. The difference is therefore 13.70 euros per fill-up for petrol and 17.60 euros for diesel.

Sardinia, September marks a new acceleration

The increase does not only concern Sassari. At the end of August, precisely on August 31, the regional average was 2.028 euros per liter for petrol and 2.141 euros for diesel.

On September 22, it reached 2.165 and 2.352 euros. In just over three weeks, this means 13.7 cents more for petrol and 21.1 cents for diesel.

On a 50-liter fill-up, compared to the end of August, the increase is equivalent to about 6.85 euros for a petrol car and 10.55 euros for a diesel.

The rise was particularly rapid in the first half of the month. On September 3, petrol in Sardinia was still at 2.050 euros and diesel at 2.162 euros. By September 17, they had already risen to 2.152 and 2.277 euros per liter respectively.

In Sassari too, choosing the gas station can make a difference

Behind the average price hide non-negligible differences between one station and another.

In the surveys of September 22, in the municipality of Sassari self-service petrol fluctuated indicatively between 2.094 and 2.219 euros per liter, while diesel ranged from about 2.269 to 2.399 euros.

Between the cheapest and the most expensive station, there is therefore a difference of about 12.5 cents per liter for petrol and 13 cents for diesel. For 50 liters, this means over 6 euros difference for a single refill.

It should be remembered that the prices of individual stations are those reported by the operators to the Ministry and may be updated at different times. Mimit specifies that the Price Observatory collects communications made by managers and that price variations can lead to updates even during the week.

Why petrol and diesel are increasing

The Sassari dynamic is part of a phase of strong increases across the entire national market.

During September oil quotes returned to over 100 dollars, while international tensions continued to be reflected in energy markets and refined products. On September 22, Mimit still recorded an increase in petrol and especially diesel on the Italian network.

On September 23, a first, very modest slowdown arrived: the national average for self-service petrol fell from 2.156 to 2.155 euros per liter, while diesel remained steady at 2.340 euros. Rather than a reversal of the trend, for now, it is a substantial stabilization after weeks of price hikes.

For Sardinia, the problem carries even greater weight because regional prices remain higher than the national average and, in the case of the Sassari area, the differential increases further. The numbers alone do not allow this gap to be attributed to a single cause, but they confirm that motorists in northern Sardinia are paying more for fuel than the Italian average.

High fuel costs weigh on daily commutes

For those who use the car every day for work, study, or to move between Sassari, the hinterland, and the outskirts, even a few cents per liter turn into a significant item in the monthly budget.

With diesel steadily above 2.30 euros and petrol above 2.10, traveling dozens of kilometers daily can translate into several dozen additional euros every month compared to the beginning of the summer.

And while the national market recorded a first pause in price hikes on September 23, the level reached by prices remains very high. The point now will be to understand if the last few days represent only a truce or the beginning of a real reversal of the trend.
