Sassari will host the Trofeo Shardana from 23 to 25 October, the Trofeo Shardana, dedicated to the memory of Antonio Demontis. The bouts will take place on the terrace of the civic market, with Italy, Belgium and Switzerland’s Under-23 national teams, Sardinian boxers, and activities for young people and families. The event is organized by Boxing Team Erittu.

The event was presented in the council chamber at Palazzo Ducale, in the presence of Mayor Giuseppe Mascia, Deputy Mayor Pierluigi Salis, City Council President Mario Pingerna, and councilors Antonio Paoni and Antonio Planetta. The choice of the civic market aims to bring sport to a central space in the city and make it a meeting place over the weekend.

The Italian team will also include Giuseppe Perugino and Roberto Cammarelle, members of the coaching staff. The women’s team comprises Sara Calvani, Madalina Grabucea, Ginevra Muzzi and Stella Tosadori; the men’s team comprises Francesco Crucilla, Fabio Smedile, Rayn Verdani, Paolo Caruso and Meliho Mateo Dorsen Olatoutou. Also on the program are bouts with local athletes and an interregional Sardinia-Lazio tournament. A local boxer may also make their debut in the Italian national team jersey.

The memorial honors Antonio Demontis, a Sassari-based entrepreneur and former Boxing Team Erittu executive who died in 2024. On behalf of the family, Gianluigi Dalu explained that the initiative aims to fulfill a wish of the entrepreneur, who was passionate about boxing and deeply attached to the city. “Antonio was a great boxing enthusiast; he would certainly have embraced the idea of bringing the noble art to the heart of his Sassari with enthusiasm, involving young people, institutions and the city,” Dalu said.

Mayor Mascia also presented the tournament as an opportunity to enhance urban spaces and encourage participation. He also highlighted boxing’s educational role, citing respect, discipline and inclusion among the values that sports can instill in young people.

Alongside the bouts, there will be activities for those new to the discipline and a cultural event. The program includes the Trofeo Gym Boxe Antonio Demontis, dedicated to controlled contact, and Sparring-IO, a project by the Italian Boxing Federation for athletes aged 10 to 13. On Friday, 23 October, at 7 p.m., the eleventh event in Scrittori alle Corde, a series organized by Dionisiaca Associazione Culturale with Boxing Team Erittu, will also take place on the terrace in Piazza Mercato. Guest speaker will be Giacomo Porcu, physiotherapist and author of “Di mani che curano e di montagne,” in conversation with Denise Pisanu.
