A morning dedicated to health, cancer prevention and awareness in the heart of Sassari. On Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 8:30 a.m., Piazza d’Italia will host the Prevention Citadel – Pink October, an initiative promoted by LILT, the Sassari Provincial Association, together with the State Police.
The event will bring together healthcare professionals, associations, institutions and local organizations with a shared goal: to bring citizens closer to a culture of prevention through check-ups, information, solidarity and sports activities.
“Prevention is the first form of security” is the message chosen for the event.
Free breast and skin check-ups
One of the day’s key features will be free breast and skin cancer prevention check-ups, carried out by specialists and volunteers involved in the initiative.
Sassari’s ASL will be there with a space dedicated to promoting cancer screenings. Citizens can get information about prevention programs, schedule appointments and, as part of colorectal cancer screening, pick up kits to test for occult blood.
LILT Sassari Provincial President Ciriaco Carru explained that the aim is to “take prevention out of the clinics,” making it accessible right in the heart of the city.
A focus on psycho-oncology and caregivers too
Prevention will cover more than just clinical matters.
An Info Point dedicated to psycho-oncology and caregivers will be set up in Piazza d’Italia, offering support, information and guidance to people facing cancer and to those who care for a family member on a daily basis.
This is also a way to draw attention to the psychological and family impact of illness, and to the importance of supporting patients and their loved ones throughout treatment.
Sport and prevention: a cycling event and basketball in Piazza d’Italia
The program also includes sports.
The Citadel will welcome the finish of the “La Storia in Bici: Sardegna 2026 – L’Isola Diversa” cycle ride, an initiative that crosses the island, combining physical activity, discovery of the local area and the promotion of a culture of prevention.
In collaboration with Dinamo 2000 and Edera Endas, the “Basket in Piazza per la Salute” Grand Prix will also take place, featuring a three-point shooting contest and a €500 first prize.
A day of blood donations in Piazza d’Italia
Another part of the event will be dedicated to blood donation, with the participation of the Sassari Provincial and Municipal AVIS. It will be possible to donate directly in Piazza d’Italia during the morning.
The issue remains particularly important for the area. In recent months, we have also reported on the decline in blood donations in Sassari and the AOU’s appeal to citizens, in a Sardinia that continues to have a significant need for blood components.
A day in memory of Dr. Roberta Proietti
The 2026 edition of the Prevention Citadel will also be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Roberta Proietti.
Her family and friends have chosen to support the initiative, turning their remembrance of her into a tangible contribution to the community and the promotion of health.
Alongside LILT Sassari and the State Police, many local organizations will take part, including the Sardinia Region, the Municipality of Sassari, ASL Sassari, the University of Sassari, Fondazione di Sardegna, AVIS, OPI Sassari, the Sassari Brigade, Coldiretti North Sardinia and Dinamo Basket 2000.
The date for Pink October and the Prevention Citadel is therefore Saturday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. in Piazza d’Italia, for a morning that will once again put prevention, solidarity and participation at the heart of the city.
