The Municipality of Sassari aims to restore the former Coni gym on Via Coradduzza, closed since the early 2000s and named after Pier Paolo Peru, a long-standing figure in the city’s volleyball scene. A regional grant of €3.3 million has been announced for the project, against an estimated cost of around €5 million. The administration’s goal is to start work by early 2028.

The funding is part of the €15 million earmarked by the Region of Sardinia for sports facilities in metropolitan cities, provinces and municipalities with more than 100,000 residents. According to the administration’s presentation, the Municipality of Sassari has been allocated €10 million for various projects. The details were presented on Saturday, October 31, during a press briefing outside the gym; the funding is part of the regional plan for sports facilities.

Before work can begin, the Municipality must complete the acquisition of the property from Sport e Salute, an in-house company of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Negotiations are at an advanced stage, and the administration has reported that funding for the transaction is available, while the final details are being worked out. Meanwhile, the Municipality’s Public Works Department has begun preparing the necessary project steps to speed up the process.

The specific grant does not cover the full estimated cost. Palazzo Ducale expects to secure the remaining amount also through savings from the other funded projects. The gym, closed for more than twenty years, is seen by the administration as a response to the demand for facilities from Sassari’s sports clubs. “This project allows us to resolve issues that have been on hold for far too many years and provide a home for the many sports clubs that have been waiting,” said Mayor Giuseppe Mascia.

Also in attendance at the presentation were Public Works Councillor Salvatore Sanna, who acknowledged the work of municipal staff in preparing the projects, and Sports Councillor Nicoletta Puggioni. Puggioni linked the investments to the ambition to strengthen Sassari’s role as a city of sport.

The programme outlined by the Municipality also includes grants for other city facilities:

  • nearly €2 million has been allocated to the Vanni Sanna Stadium for renovation and functional upgrades;
  • around €1.6 million is earmarked to complete the sports hall on Via Kennedy, in the Latte Dolce district;
  • around €1.2 million is allocated to the Pinna racecourse, with the intention of expanding the facility’s uses beyond horse-racing events.
