It began on Via Benvenuto Lobina, in the Sant’Orsola Sud neighborhood, as part of a major road and sidewalk maintenance plan for Sassari. The work, which began in the days leading up to Saturday, October 31, is worth a total of €630,000 and covers the urban area, outlying areas and rural hamlets.
The funding comes from the municipal budget and the framework agreement for the most urgent and critical issues affecting the road network. According to the municipality, the locations requiring work were identified through a survey of municipal roads. The program primarily involves resurfacing the most deteriorated roads.
The companies selected through public procurement procedures will mill the existing asphalt and lay a new surface. Work will cover sections of around 100 linear meters at each identified location. In some cases, such as on Via Lobina, the work also includes repairing sidewalks alongside the roadway.
The administration said that additional funding for sidewalks had been secured through an open procedure run by the Sardinia Region. The work will also be coordinated with the Environment Department: in several locations, the roots of hackberry trees and other plants have damaged pedestrian paths. The aim is to address the problem while protecting the trees, and, if necessary, also assess whether they should be removed and replanted elsewhere.
Once work on Via Lobina and a short stretch of Via Aldo Cesaraccio is complete, the plan will continue with road resurfacing on the following streets:
- Via Pasubio
- Via Tarquinio Sini
- Via Tirso
- Via Antonio Cecchi
- Via Giacomo Bove
- Via Medaglie d’Oro
Councillor Massimo Rizzu acknowledged the problems caused by an extensive and aging road network and said the municipality is seeking more substantial funding for a broader program. The mayor joined the councillor at the opening of the construction site on Via Lobina. The municipal plan covers roads within the city; it is separate from the regional funding allocated for routine maintenance of provincial roads.
