Where to park in central Sassari: a guide to car parks

Ideal for: Piazza d'Italia, via Roma, Museo Sanna and shopping in the centre.

The underground car park at Piazza Fiume is probably the most convenient option for those arriving in Sassari to visit the centre.

It has 362 parking spaces, is open 24 hours a day and is located on via Enrico Costa, practically just behind piazza d'Italia. From here, piazza Castello, via Roma, Museo Sanna and the historic centre are also easy to reach.

The standard rate starts at 1.20 euros per hour. The first 30 minutes are free, and different rates apply during certain times of day: from 13:00 to 16:00 and from 20:00 to 08:00, the cost drops to one euro per hour. On Sundays, a rate of 3 euros applies during the daytime period.

The maximum permitted height is 2.05 metres and vehicles powered by LPG are not allowed access.

If you do not know Sassari and want a simple option, this is probably the most practical one.

Ideal for: Piazza d'Italia, the University, Giardini Pubblici and the historic centre.

On the opposite side from piazza Fiume is the large underground car park at Emiciclo Garibaldi.

With 412 parking spaces, it is one of the largest facilities in the centre. Here too, it is open 24 hours a day.

Its location is strategic: once you leave the car park, you are between the Giardini Pubblici, the University and the start of the city centre. Piazza d'Italia can be reached with a short walk.

The rates are essentially similar to those at Piazza Fiume: 1.20 euros for the first hour, the first 30 minutes free and reduced rates during certain time periods.

Here too, the maximum height is 2.05 metres and LPG vehicles cannot enter.

Between Piazza Fiume and Emiciclo, the choice depends mainly on the direction from which you arrive. Both allow you to forget about the car for the rest of your visit.

Ideal for: the Duomo, Palazzo Ducale, Corso and the historic centre.

For those who want to go straight into the oldest part of Sassari, the Mercato Civico car park is one of the most interesting alternatives.

It is located beneath the market, with an entrance from the piazza Colonnello Serra area, and has 212 parking spaces spread over three underground levels.

From here, corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Palazzo Ducale, the Cathedral of San Nicola and numerous alleys in the historic centre are easy to reach.

It is open 24 hours a day. The standard rate starts at 1.20 euros for the first hour, with a daily maximum of 9 euros. From Monday to Saturday, between 15:00 and 21:00, the maximum rate is 3 euros; daytime Sunday parking also has a maximum of 3 euros.

If your itinerary is mainly devoted to historic Sassari, this is one of the best choices.

Ideal for: viale Italia, the University and a full day in the centre.

The car park on via dei Mille is one of the largest in the central area, with approximately 395 parking spaces distributed between surface and covered levels.

It is open 24 hours a day and is a good alternative to the car parks closest to piazza d'Italia, especially on busier days.

The first 30 minutes are free, the first hour costs 1.20 euros and the maximum daily rate is 9 euros.

The rates for longer stays are also attractive: a maximum of 3 euros in the afternoon from Monday to Saturday, 2 euros overnight and 3 euros on Sundays during the daytime period.

From here, the centre is easy to reach on foot via viale Italia.

Ideal for: via Roma, offices, Museo Sanna and the modern centre.

A little further away than the previous options, the car park on viale Dante is particularly convenient for those arriving from the eastern part of the city.

It has 183 spaces, is open 24 hours a day and is just a few minutes from the centre.

Here too, the first 30 minutes are free. The rate starts at 1.20 euros for the first hour, with a maximum of 9 euros for the full day and afternoon, overnight and Sunday concessions.

It is particularly useful if your destination is the area around via Roma, Museo Sanna, the courthouse or piazza d'Italia, without needing to drive any closer.

Ideal for: those who want to save money and do not mind walking.

If the priority is not to pay for parking, one of the main alternatives is piazza Antonio Segni.

According to the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the area has approximately 750 free spaces, making it one of the city's largest free car parks.

The trade-off is the distance: you are no longer in the historic centre and will need to continue on foot or use public transport.

It can nevertheless be a good solution for those spending many hours in Sassari and who do not need to leave their car just a few minutes from piazza d'Italia.

Central Sassari has approximately 730 paid on-street parking spaces.

The standard rate is 50 cents every 20 minutes, equivalent to 1.50 euros per hour.

Payment is required from Monday to Saturday during the following periods:

• 09:00–13:00
• 16:00–20:00

On Sundays and public holidays, parking in the blue-line spaces is not subject to the standard charge.

They can be very convenient for a quick errand. If, on the other hand, you want to visit Sassari for several hours, multi-storey car parks are often simpler and, thanks to their maximum rates, more economical too.

The centre has several parking areas belonging to zones A and B, with spaces reserved for residents.

From 2025, some of these spaces may also be used by non-residents during certain time periods with a 60-minute parking disc, while at other times of day they become reserved exclusively for residents again.

The times are not the same on every street.

In this case, the most important rule is therefore always to read the signs before leaving your car. A parking space that appears to be free at 11:00 may be reserved for residents a few hours later.

In summary:

• For visiting Sassari for the first time: Piazza Fiume.
• For piazza d'Italia and the Giardini Pubblici: Emiciclo Garibaldi.
• For the Duomo and historic centre: Mercato Civico.
• For a long stay: via dei Mille.
• For via Roma and Museo Sanna: viale Dante.
• For free parking: piazza Segni.
• For a quick errand: blue-line spaces.

Once you reach the centre, continuing to move the car is rarely worthwhile.

From piazza d'Italia, you can walk to piazza Castello, corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Palazzo Ducale, the Duomo, Palazzo di Città and many of the city's main attractions.

So choose the car park that is most convenient for the direction from which you arrive, lock the car and continue on foot.

After all, driving around the same block three times looking for a free space is not exactly the tourist itinerary we recommend for discovering Sassari.
