The air bridge between Sardinia and the United States is set to grow even stronger. Following Delta Air Lines’ historic debut in 2026, United Airlines has also announced a direct connection to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport.
The new route will connect Newark Liberty International Airport, one of the main airports serving the New York metropolitan area, with Olbia starting on May 27, 2027.
There will be three weekly flights, operated with a Boeing 767-300ER.
From Newark to Sardinia nonstop
The Olbia connection is part of the broader international expansion plan announced by United for 2027, the largest in the U.S. airline’s history.
Sardinia will be one of the ten new international destinations added to the carrier’s network. Passengers will thus be able to reach the Island directly from the New York area without making intermediate stops at European hubs.
United has already put the tickets on sale, although the airline specifies that the new international routes remain subject to approval by the relevant authorities.
Following Delta, connections between Sardinia and the United States expand
The announcement comes just a few months after the opening of Sardinia’s first-ever direct transatlantic route.
In May 2026, Delta Air Lines inaugurated the New York JFK–Olbia route, with four weekly flights during the season and a Boeing 767-300ER. This new service opened the U.S. market to scheduled nonstop connections with the Island for the first time.
United’s arrival in 2027 therefore represents a further sign of the major American airlines’ interest in Olbia and Sardinia, particularly in a U.S. tourism market that has recorded strong growth in recent years.
This opens a new chapter in Costa Smeralda Airport’s international expansion, with Newark set to join the map of direct connections between Sardinia and the United States.
