Almost €20 million from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to upgrade the water system in the Sassari area. The project, promoted by Abbanoa, aims to strengthen water supply and network reliability while reducing water losses. Including co-funding and further planned resources, the total value exceeds €25 million.
The project concerns infrastructure serving the Sassari area, where securing water supplies and ensuring the resilience of the networks are key priorities. The funding was announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) on Saturday, October 3. Abbanoa is the sole operator of the integrated water service in Sardinia. It is wholly publicly owned, with the Region and 342 municipalities as shareholders.
The funds allocated to Sassari are part of the PNRR Water Fund. According to the ministry, the Fund’s entire allocation of €1.55 billion was awarded in less than four months, together with Invitalia, the managing entity. Minister Matteo Salvini highlighted the speed of the allocation and the importance of investment in the security and efficiency of Sardinia’s water system.
Alberto Di Rubba, a member of parliament and the Lega’s regional commissioner in Sardinia, also commented on the funding. «Almost €20 million from the MIT to strengthen water infrastructure in the Sassari area, as part of an overall investment exceeding €25 million», he said. Di Rubba linked the contribution to a strategy to accelerate infrastructure investment on the island, citing water networks, roads and railways.
The funding comes in addition to separate regional initiatives involving different amounts and projects. The Region had announced a total allocation of €50 million for the island’s water networks, including €6.9 million for Sassari: this sum is distinct from the MIT funding for the project promoted by Abbanoa.
Another separate project concerned the Flumendosa-Mulargia system: in June, the Region announced the completion of €10 million in PNRR-funded works aimed at improving water supply, including for domestic uses managed by Abbanoa. This is a different project from the one involving the networks in the Sassari area.
In Sassari, concerns about continuity of service had also arisen in connection with water outages linked to work on the Coghinas 2 aqueduct, scheduled for September 22. The new funding, however, is for the upgrade project promoted by Abbanoa; the MIT announcement does not specify the individual works to be carried out.
