A first concrete step towards transforming piazza Amundsen, in the Latte Dolce neighborhood. Sassari City Council has approved the technical and economic feasibility project for the redevelopment of the space, which has long been the focus of residents’ requests.

The financial framework provides for a total intervention costing 1 million 350 thousand euros.

Green light for the feasibility project

The approval concerns the so-called PFTE, the document that defines the work’s essential features and allows the City Council to proceed with the design process and seek the resources needed to carry it out.

The design process was launched thanks to the Sardinia Region’s Revolving Fund, used by the City Council to prepare a series of projects to be subsequently submitted for funding.

Approximately 46,500 euros was used for the design of piazza Amundsen.

The step is therefore significant, but it does not yet mean that the construction site will open: the subsequent phases must be completed and funding secured before the work can go ahead.

A square long awaited by residents

The condition of the area has long been at the center of neighborhood protests.

Potholes, uneven surfaces and deteriorated paving prompted the Latte Dolce and Santa Maria di Pisa Committee to organize a petition in recent months, asking the City Council to speed up the redevelopment.

The situation had become so well known that some residents had ironically nicknamed the space “piazza dei Caduti”, referring to the difficulties faced above all by elderly people and those with reduced mobility.

The petition collected more than 150 signatures in just a few days.

The idea of naming it after Giovannino Giordo

The neighborhood has also put forward a proposal for the square’s future: to name it after Giovannino Giordo, a Sassarese singer-songwriter with deep ties to Latte Dolce and the city’s popular culture.

For now, this is a proposal put forward by the committee, not a name that has already been approved by the City Council.

Residents’ aim, however, is to accompany the physical transformation of the space with a new sense of identity for the neighborhood.

Another piece of the puzzle for Latte Dolce

The redevelopment of piazza Amundsen is part of the broader program through which Palazzo Ducale is planning projects concerning mobility and public spaces in various neighborhoods across the city.

For Latte Dolce, changes to traffic circulation are also being studied in the area of via Cilea, via Leoncavallo, via Solari and via Lago di Baratz.

Meanwhile, after years of requests from residents, an important administrative step has been taken for piazza Amundsen.

The project now exists. The next challenge will be to find the resources to turn it into a construction site and give the neighborhood a real square once again.
