The historic fountain in the Evelina Mameli Calvino Public Gardens in Sassari is set to return to operation.

The City Council has approved the executive project for the fountain’s major restoration, covering the structure located between Via Tavolara and Via Coppino, which has been without water for some time and is showing clear signs of deterioration.

A total of €50,000 has been allocated to the project.

The fountain’s water system will be restored

The main objective of the work is to return the fountain to full working order.

The structure currently has cracks in its paving and signs of subsidence, issues that were likely caused over time by water leaks.

The project therefore includes work to restore the fountain’s hydraulic system as well as its overall architectural appearance.

Of the €50,000 available, approximately €35,800 will be allocated directly to the construction work, including health and safety costs. The remaining funds will cover VAT and technical expenses.

A historic fountain in the heart of the Public Gardens

The circular fountain is one of the defining features of the Public Gardens and holds significant historical, architectural and landscape value.

For this reason, the project also required the involvement of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, which authorised the work last May subject to a number of conditions.

The initial feasibility project had already been approved by the City Council in May. With the latest approval of the executive project, the restoration has now taken another significant step towards implementation.

The goal: bring water back to the fountain

The approval does not yet mean that construction work is about to begin, and the documents published by the Municipality do not specify an exact date for the start of the works.

The objective, however, is now clear: to restore a structure that has remained without water for years and return one of the Public Gardens’ most recognisable landmarks to the city.

After years of inactivity, the Via Tavolara fountain is now preparing to reclaim its place at the heart of Sassari’s Public Gardens.
