Di Stefano strikes early, then game management
The match, preceded by a minute of silence in memory of Sandro Mazzola, flared up immediately. After just three minutes, the hosts carved out a huge chance with an overhead kick by Petrelli, kept out by a diving save from the alert Zaccagno. In the 6th minute, however, the Sardinians took the lead: Gigi Scotto played Lorenzo Di Stefano through with a vertical pass, and the forward broke into space to beat Theiner with an accurate low strike into the corner.
A goal to the good, the Sassari side—lining up with Mamadou Kebbeh in the defensive back three in place of the unavailable Nunziatini—controlled play with authority, easing the opposition's pressure and coming close to doubling their lead in the 22nd minute, again through Di Stefano. As the minutes ticked by, fatigue began to take its toll on the Rossoblù ranks. Greco tried to reshuffle the team, bringing on Francesco Corsinelli and Cristian Bunino as well, but in the 78th minute the home side drew level: Farinelli worked the ball well and fed Coveri on the edge of the area, who turned cleverly and beat Zaccagno with a low right-footed strike across goal just inside the post.
A frantic period of stoppage time saw protests from Sassari, culminating in the sending-off of team manager Antonello Mela and a booking for Scotto following a Football Video Support review.
