Volotea is reversing course on its winter connection between Olbia and Madrid. The airline has cancelled the flights scheduled for October, November and the first half of December 2026, scaling back one of the main announcements for the winter season at Costa Smeralda Airport.

The decision, confirmed by the carrier to La Nuova Sardegna on October 10, comes just over two months after the plan to expand connections was unveiled. The suspension is reportedly due to geopolitical instability, operational difficulties and high fuel costs.

Olbia–Madrid: October and November flights cancelled

The connection to the Spanish capital was set to be one of the new features of the 2026–2027 winter season. The route, already operated during the summer season, would for the first time have continued through the colder months.

On August 5, Volotea announced a major expansion of its Olbia base, planning a 75% increase in available seats compared with the previous winter.

The plan included the return of flights to Bologna, a Christmas connection to Naples and three international destinations: Barcelona, Paris Orly and Madrid.

A project we had already covered, highlighting the new opportunities for residents of northern Sardinia.

Now, however, the cancellation of flights to Madrid changes at least part of that schedule. A possible resumption in the second half of December has yet to be confirmed.

High fuel costs and international tensions: the reasons for the suspension

According to information Volotea provided to La Nuova Sardegna, the decision is reportedly linked to a particularly challenging climate for air travel, marked by high fuel costs and geopolitical and operational instability.

The difficulties are not limited to Sardinia. In the first few days of October, the airline had already temporarily suspended some routes from Ancona to Spain and Sicily.

These measures are part of a period of operational restructuring for the carrier, which is also working to reduce its fleet and manage its financial difficulties.

What happens to passengers who have already booked an Olbia–Madrid flight?

The airline has begun notifying affected passengers, informing them of the cancellations and the options available to them.

Anyone who purchased a ticket for one of the cancelled flights can request a full refund or consider an alternative option. Volotea has also said it is offering passengers the option to change their flight at no extra cost.

Under European Regulation 261/2004, in the event of a cancellation, passengers are entitled to choose between a refund and alternative transport under the conditions set out in the legislation.

Any additional financial compensation, however, depends on factors such as how much notice was given and the circumstances that led to the cancellation.

Passengers are therefore advised to check the communications they have received from the airline and verify the available options through Volotea’s official channels.

A setback for Sardinia’s winter connections

The suspension of the Olbia–Madrid route is an obstacle to the strategy of extending air travel in northern Sardinia beyond the peak season, which aims to expand connections beyond the tourist months.

The issue is particularly significant at a time when the Sardinia Region is seeking to encourage flights during the low season, including through the airport tax cuts planned for the winter months.

For now, the cancellation does not amount to a definitive withdrawal of the Madrid route. However, it remains to be clarified when the connection might actually resume and what the final flight schedule will be over the Christmas holidays.

For passengers in northern Sardinia, attention now turns to the airline’s next official announcements.
